Shortly before his untimely death in 2003, Jack Washington began a fundraising campaign to help needy children cover basic school expenses. With his passing, the community created a memorial fund in Jack’s name; a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to serving youth. Now in its ninth year, the Jack Washington Wonderful World Fund continues to provide yearly college scholarships as well as funding to area homeless students for needs not covered by other sources.
This year’s $2,500 scholarship recipient is Alexis McCarty. “Words will never be able to express how grateful I am,” she said. “By giving a little, I promise to do a lot!” …words that would warm the heart of Mr. Washington, whose booming voice and wide smile greeted students at several area schools every morning as they came to school.
Now it’s his wife, Ann, who continues to serve the kids her husband treasured. “We’ve been so blessed; the donations just seem to come and it allows us to continue what Jack started,” she says, speaking of the fund that to date has provided nearly $50,000 in an effort to give students a hand up.
On August 14 and 28, Smart Cow Yogurt Bar, at 2321 Oneida Street in Green Bay, will donate part of the entire day’s sales to the Jack Washington Wonderful World Fund. Like Jack, Smart Cow is also on a mission to support local education, regularly donating part of an entire day’s sales to a local school to help with challenging budget situations.
